Continuous, clear awareness of the present moment. Always returning, whether from an emotional outburst, an enjoyable fantasy or a melancholy remembrance; always returning to this moment.

Rather than having your "mind-full" of something, mindfulness clears out excess mental and emotional baggage, bringing clarity and a fluidity of mind that allows thoughts, feelings and perceptions to flow smoothly through without sticking and hindering each other.

This book offers a new approach to mindfulness based on the experience of unity that is the foundation of Zen. You'll learn to find this realm of unity, where there are no boundaries, no lack and no contention, then integrate it with your "normal" states of mind. This clearly-presented three step process transforms your everyday experience of life, resulting in a mindfulness that lets you live in a dynamic way directly inspired by the living moment rather than being unconsciously driven by your fears, worries and fantasies.

Three Steps to Mindfulness eBook Kipp Ryodo Hawley

Three Steps to Mindfulness: Bringing Zen Awareness Into Your Life is a very short, very well-written guide to achieving mindfulness.

It is not easy for anyone to describe how their own inner mind operates, let alone have another do it for us. This book goes past mere description by first explaining to the reader in clear language how one interprets the world, then providing simple techniques for dropping away unconscious attachments inherent in human viewpoints. The result is clear(er) perception and a calmer, more objective basis for reacting to the people and the world around us.

Ryodo Hawley - the founder of my neighborhood Zen sitting group - told me it took him years to get this text "just so." His effort has been well-rewarded; here we have a clear, simple statement of "what to do and how to do it." I find myself coming back to Three Steps to Mindfulness to refresh and expand my understanding.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in Zen, or merely in achieving a calmer outlook on our hyper-active world.

Three Steps to Mindfulness eBook Kipp Ryodo Hawley Reviews

There are a plethora of mindfulness and Zen-themed books on the market, but this one stands out for being as practical and pragmatic as it is philosophical and insightful. Written in a crisp and engaging style (the author has a particular gift with vivid metaphors), THREE STEPS TO MINDFULNESS offers a clear and assessible approach to being more fully aware of the present moment. I certainly struggle with a mind that zigs and zags all over the place far often than I would like, and following the titular steps has helped me to be a little more "here and now" than "there and then."

The economical style of the book also makes it an ideal introductory guide to mindfulness practice. There's not an ounce of "padding," which makes it far more immediate and appealing than some many other titles on the same subject.

Highly recommended.

This one doesn't. This book outlines a very effective technique for mindfulness, and the words used help to describe the technique. It's an excellent technique and book, and a good step on a long path of mindfulness.

I reviewed the paperback a while back. I recently bought the version to keep with my traveling library after reading the paperback.
This book presents a simple, useful and concrete method for training your mind based on a Zen perspective.

The author points out that mindfulness is something you do. His method is based on exploring and becoming familiar with the subjective, objective and essential realms of your mind. The book is quite an effective travel guidebook to these realms, complete with chapters placing the method in a historical and philosophical context.

There is a lot in this book even though the author has pared it down to less than 50 pages. I'm finding that it rewards multiple readings read it, work with what you've learned. Then read it again and you'll discover new insights. It's clarity and brevity are ideal for this. Don't put it on a shelf keep it handy. As questions come up, read it some more and there will be more waiting for you.
