“Soccer Sami and the Big Meanie Coach” is the story of an enthusiastic little hippo named Sami, who loves to play soccer. She joins her friends on a young girls soccer team only to be bullied by a big meanie coach. The coach only cares about winning so he never plays Sami…until he has to…in the championship game. See how - with friends, family and determination - Sami wins the day…in more ways than one. It’s got a few laughs…it’s got a few tears…it’s even got a bit of soccer. It’s a charming kids soccer book about sportsmanship, teamwork and compassion for everyone from toddlers to young readers.

My six year-old and I read this yesterday. The book was very timely as we are in the midst of soccer season (although the 6 year-old's coach is lovely) and it raised a lot of interesting questions. For example, my 6 year-old had a hard time understanding how someone could love doing something and not be considered good at it. The concept of others judging your performance from the outside was a bit foreign for him, much to my surprise. And the coach. Oh, the coach! We immediately connected that guy to the Grinch, which I believe was the writer's intent.

The illustrations were eye-catching and had a number of funny side notes. We very much enjoyed it overall, and I appreciated that the soccer players were girls. Below is what the 6 year-old had to say. It contains a spoiler.

"Parts teach you good lessons, like when you get angry don’t take it out on other people. A funny part was when the keeper thought she had got Sami’s ball, but she really got Sami’s shoe and the ball just rolled into the goal!"

Soccer Sami and the Big Meanie Coach edition by stOoART Children eBooks Reviews

This fun book had me rooting for little Sami all the way through. She may be terrible at soccer, but she has heaps of determination, a big heart and a great attitude. The book has wonderful, bright illustrations and the story is told in rhyme. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and loved its positive message for kids - try your best at everything and enjoy things; who knows, one day your enthusiasm and optimism may help save the day when it really matters.
Soccer Sami and the Big Meanie Coach is a wonderfully illustrated children's picture book about a main character who despite of her own challenges of playing soccer well, she doesn't lose her zest for playing. The main challenge is external with a question of whether or not if she will ever get to play on her team. When the opportunity arrives, with prior encouragement from her loving and supportive grandmother, she finds courage to pull through with a positive and heart-warming sentiment at the end. Lovely and encouraging story!
Great story! My five year old loved it and so did I! I strongly recommend it to anyone with children!
As a parent who never had star athlete kids, it was so refreshing to find a children's book that celebrates being not the best athlete but the kind of kid who shows up and always tries hard. There are lessons here for kids, parents and definitely for coaches! The art is absolutely delightful and the story is both fun and contains a great message. I would highly recommend this book for children who are starting out in team sports. Sami was a great character.
My kids and I loved this book, both for the writing and the illustrations. My 4 year old son plays soccer, so the message of this book to keep trying and do your best even if things aren't going your way was exactly the kind of wisdom I want him to learn, and the writing and artwork were so fun that he was laughing and following along throughout. stOoART is a great new children's author to pay attention to! Looking forward to more of his books in the future.
Sami loves soccer. It’s all she dreams about and wishes to be the best. When she joins her local team, the coach doesn’t see her potential. No matter what Sami endures, even sitting on the beach game after game, she keeps true to her dreams. One day she gets the opportunity to play. You’ll see what happens when you read this book. Children will experience seeing the good in others, whether it is in Sami, her grandmother, fellow teammates, or even a meanie coach—you just have to look for the good in others. Children will love the illustrations as they are colorful and child friendly.
I really, really liked this story. It’s exactly what the title says, all about little Sami who joins the soccer team only to be greeted by the meanest of coaches. As she sits on the bench every game not allowed to play she still enjoys the game and her teammates.

The story is written in a fun rhyme that flows very well and the pictures are delightful. The story ends on a wonderful note and I thought the coaches new glasses was a really fun touch.

I smiled throughout this read and I think you and your kids will too. I’m not worried about the kids re-reading this one, I think I might just keep it to read again myself from time to time.
